Things to do in Caldas da Rainha
Caldas da Rainha has been a wellness epicentre since the 1400s when the world’s first thermal hospital was built on the city’s sulphur-rich hot springs. The current canary-yellow hospital dates back to the 19th century and is a local landmark.
Pick up a map at the tourist office and follow the Rota Bordallo. The trail winds through the city and takes you past larger-than-life sculptures created by famous Portuguese artist, Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro. Find out more about the city’s artistic heritage at Museu da Cerâmica. The museum is housed in a handsome historic manor and explores how ceramic art has evolved over the centuries.
Admire paintings, sculptures and ceramics at Museu de José Malhoa. There’s an impressive collection of works by famous Portuguese painter José Malhoa, as well as masterpieces by other artists from throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
Stock up on supplies at the daily market in Praça da República. Brightly coloured tents shade stalls piled high with fruit, vegetables, cheese, bread and pastries. The plaza is a hive of activity and a great place to sip a coffee, enjoy a Portuguese custard tart and people watch.
Stroll along shady tree-lined paths in Parque D. Carlos I. The well-maintained was once reserved for hospital patients but is now a lovely family-friendly space. Enjoy a picnic on the grass, rent a boat and paddle around the lake and keep an eye out for Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro sculptures.

Caldas da Rainha is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. The city is in the Oeste region, a 1.5-hour drive from Lisbon. Local buses connect Caldas da Rainha with major towns and cities across Portugal. Lisbon International Airport is a 1.5-hour drive away.
