Once just a tiny fishing village, Quarteira is now one of the Algarve’s most bustling beach resorts. Its coastline is dominated by Blue Flag beaches and an upscale marina while prestigious golf courses dot the interior.
Explore the high-end dining and shopping facilities of the Marina de Vilamoura, which provides a mooring place for luxury yachts. Stretching to the east is Praia de Vilamoura, a golden beach where you can rent sun loungers or swim in the Atlantic Ocean. The Passeio Das Dunas links to neighbouring Praia de Quarteira, which is backed by alfresco restaurants and bars.
For a day away from the sand, head to the Roman ruins of Cerro da Vila to explore its centuries-old residences, baths and a necropolis, as well as the remains of mosaic pavements. A short drive inland will take you to the charming town of Loulé, which features a Moorish castle and a covered market selling fresh produce and regional handicrafts.
Getting there
Quarteira is a 25-minute drive from Faro and Algarve Airport, which has flights to destinations across Europe. Buses connect to Quarteira from towns and villages across the Algarve while the beachfront area is easily explored on foot.
